12 Days of Australian Prosecco for Christmas
Australia at Christmas time is typically warm, and our family alternates between oven-based roast chicken or pork and vegetables, to prawns, smoked salmon and salads, depending on the weather forecast.
And what better way to compliment our summer festive foods than with Prosecco?
It’s fresh and crisp, with aromas of apple, citrus and wisteria. Served ice-cold, it pairs beautifully with oysters and prawns, whilst the high acidity makes it perfect for cutting through the fat on your roast pork or chicken if you still like your Christmas lunch or dinner more traditional.
Here’s my comprehensive list of 12 Australian Prosecco labels you won’t go wrong with for Christmas, no matter what part of our wide, brown land you’re celebrating in!
1 Dal Zotto Pucino Prosecco Cheshunt, King Valley, Vic
Number 1 obviously is Dal Zotto – Australia’s first Prosecco, from the heart of the King Valley in Victoria’s North East. This wine was pioneered by Otto Dal Zotto as an homage to his hometown, Valdobbiadene in Italy’s Veneto region, and the birthplace of Prosecco. “Pale straw, vivid green youthful hue; tantalizing hints of fresh cut pear, citrus blossom and a mere suggestion of spice jump out and present themselves on the bouquet; the palate is soft, appealing, approachable and basically a whole lot of fun, with gentle bubbles and alcohol combining seamlessly, and offering the maximum amount of freshness for a drink early, enjoy and not necessarily in moderation style of sparkling wine; a spot on example of Prosecco.”

See Saw Wines have only just started producing Prosecco in the New South Wales township of Orange, typically known as a fruit-growing area, With a strong Italian community it was inevitable that someone would eventually create a prosecco.

3. Christmont ‘La Zona’ Prosecco, Cheshunt, King Valley, Vic
Chrismont have been making excellent quality wines in the King Valley for many years, and their prosecco is no exception. With delicate bubbles,” this lively sparking emulates the authentic Italian style of dry, not sweet, and is inspired as much by its rich heritage as the prevailing lifestyle and pristine climate of King Valley. ”
4. Symphonia Prosecco, Myhrree King Valley, Vic
The newest King Valley Prosecco comes from a family who have been experiemting with many different French and Italian varieties including Saperavi, Savagnin, on the rolling hills of Myhrree, and is “zesty, with a citrus aroma and a crisp flavour. The bubbles are gentle and delightfully refreshing. A relatively low Alcohol content of 11% makes it a perfect aperitif served directly from the ice bucket on a warm afternoon. ”
- Box Grove Prosecco, Nagambie Avenel, Vic
Wine maker Sarah Gough has been doing some pretty fabulous things at her winery in Avenel, near Nagambie in Victoria’s north…and recently turned her hand to prosecco. She’s pretty pleased with her efforts, and describes its nose and flavour “bursting with fresh apple and pear, finishing with an exuberant hint of lemon. Gentle bubbles and low alcohol make it perfect for any time of day—a relaxed brunch, a light lunch or a pre-dinner aperitif, perhaps served with a dash of aperol, mineral water and a twist of orange for a stylish spritzer—or simply shared with friends for no particular reason at all.”
- Santa D’Sas Prosecco, Cheshunt, King Valley, Vic
The Santa and D’Sas boys have been making Italian wines for some time, at their winery in Geelong, sourcing local fruit as well as grapes from Heathcote. In recent times they’ve bought in some King Valley fruit to create their own prosecco, with the gorgeous labels designed by Matt Di Sciascio’s wife.
Distinctive and fragrant nose of fresh apples, lime and pear aromas along with the faintest hint of elderflowers. Crisp, clean and delicate with fine bubbles on the palate. Intense flavours of apples and citrus lead to a finish with lingering fruit and floral notes.”
- Freeman Prosecco, Prunevale, NSW
The Freeman prosecco has just taken out the top award at the recent Alternative Wine Varieties Wine Show in Mildura. It’s scored 94 points in the 2017 Halliday Wine Companion, with Campbell Mattinson calling it “Another excellent release. Brian Freeman packs flavour into his Prosecco , without resorting to over sweetness. All citrus and bran, custard and cooked ripe pears. It builds and builds with flavour but then ultimately, refreshes”. We are loving drinking this on the prosecco deck right now.
- Pizzini Prosecco, Whitfield, King Valley, ViC
The Pizzini family have just been awarded another Gold medal at the RACV Tourism awards thanks to their fantastic cellar door and cooking school. They are calling the 2016 prosecco their best one yet, with “initial aromas include yeasty and melon notes, as the wine opens up in the glass the nose smacks of citrus blossom, fresh lime, Wisteria flower and green apples. It is refreshingly fizzy with gentle, lemony acidity.”
- Sam Miranda Prosecco, Whitfield, King Valley, Vic
With grapes grown on a North Eastern facing slope in the upper King Valley, Sam Miranda’s prosecco is a multi-award winning example. “A generous bead of bubbles with a pale straw colour, nice green apple aromas on the nose. Soft on the palate with a sherbet like acidity that finishes crisp and refreshing with a touch of complexity.”
- Larry Cherubino ‘Carte Blanc’ Prosecco, Pemberton WA
West Australian Winemaker Larry Cherubino launched his prosecco late last year. It’s taken that long for me to get my hands on a bottle but it was worth the wait, as it’s a great example, with delicate bubbles and lovely nose. “It’s complex on the palate with texture, freshness and a long clean finish”
- Dal Zotto L’Immigrante Prosecco, Cheshunt, – metodo classico
Usually only available to Cellar Door and Wine Club members, Dal Zotto’s L’Immigrante prosecco is in fact made in the tradition method (like Champagne). “Pale straw, yet youthful for an aged style of Prosecco, hinting at the serious nature of the style; the bouquet delves into a touch of toasty complexity, underpinned by ample levels of pear, and struck quartz mineral complexity; the palate reveals the complete story, with generous mouth filling bubbles on entry, zesty citrus fruit on the mid palate, and inviting blanched almonds on the dry and chalky finish; beautifully constructed and a fitting tribute to Otto Dal Zotto’s heritage.”
- Brown Brothers Limited Release Vintage, Banksdale, King Valley, Vic
Brown Brothers have 125 years of winemaking tradition behind them, and this prosecco is a beautiful, elegant version. Only the best grapes from the Banksdale vineyard, 485m above sea level, are selected for the Limited Release, and it has notes of Granny Smith apple, pear, along with a citrus undertone.
